We 'Zoomed' with Michael Marriot who spoke to us about 'Getting the Best from your Roses .'
Thank you for a very interesting talk. Michael is one of the worlds leading rosarians. He has worked for David Austin roses for 35 years where he became an expert on all matters relating to roses and he gave us lots of practical advice. We must choose varieties carefully to get the best out of our plants (and select for disease resistance), buy bare root where possible and plant with mycorrhizal fungi. Keep them moist, mulched and well fed, and we must not worry too much about pruning. Species roses do not need pruning at all, and other roses we must just prune to maintain size, shape and balance in the plant. He also recommended planting them, not as a mono-culture, but in mixed borders - this will prevent to much infection with common diseases.

We 'Zoomed' with Katherine Crouch who spoke to us about 'Plants that should be better known .'
Thank you Katherine for a very entertaining and informative talk. We were introduced to new plants and new varieites but also heard about interesting benefits of some plant varieties that we rather over look! Katherine's list of plant vairities can be found on our 'Practical Gardening Tips' page.

We welcomed Allison Oldershaw who came to talk to us to demonstrate Willow Weaving.
It was a lovely evening, with lots of practical advice about willow and how to work with it. Alison demonstrated a willow ring and a plant support, but also brought along some examples of other beautiful things she has made for her garden. Alison has kindly sent us some useful fact sheets with lots of information about where to source willow rods and how to get started. These can be viewed on our 'Practical Garden Tips' page, click the link below. Alison runs workshops from her home in Gloucestershire.

The Annual General Meeting
The meeting in September was the AGM. This was well attended, thank you to all those who came. The minutes of the meeting are now published here on our Governance Page. The meeting was followed by a fabulous talk by Adam Alexander. Adam spoke to us about "Practical Aspects of seed saving". This was an incredibly useful and interesting talk, Adam gave tips on saving seeds from all kinds of fruit and vegetable crops including tomatoes, peppers, parsnips and beans. Adam's book 'The Seed Detective' was Radio 4's The Food Programme book of the year.
Annual Produce Show
The show was on Sunday 3rd September. It was a wonderful display of fruit and vegetable produce, cookery, flower arranging and photography. Thank you to all who entered and everyone who came and supported on the day. It is a fabulous village tradition that the Garden club is proud to keep going. Every year our judges are surprised and impressed by the quality of exhibits, the variety of the show, but also of the fact that new people and novice growers are always keen to take part. Congratulations to all our trophy winners this year. A particular mention to Sam Garett, the 2023 winner of the Cyril Collins Cup for the most points at the show. A full list of our all our 2023 trophy winners can be found on the winners page, link below:
